Level One Close Quarters Survival Overview
Level One CQS introduces students to key principles of close-quarters defense. This course focuses on practical self-defense techniques that are essential when facing a deadly threat without access to a weapon. You will learn both empty-hand and intermediate weapon skills such as strikes, blocks, and take-away techniques. Whether you are new to self-defense or have some experience, this class prepares you to protect yourself in dangerous situations.
Class Fee & Payment Details
The fee for the Level One CQS course is
$225, which covers all materials and instructor time. Payments can be made online or by sending a check to
E.T. Gwynn at
PO Box 3956, Durango, CO 81302. If you need to cancel, a
20% refund will be provided. Please ensure payment is received by the Monday before the class to secure your spot.
Class Schedule & Location
The
Level One CQS class is held in
Durango, Colorado. The course can be completed in
one full day or
two evening sessions as scheduled. Training runs from
9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a lunch break (students are responsible for their own lunch). The course requires a minimum of
four students to run, and if the minimum is not met, the class will be rescheduled.
Prerequisites & Requirements
This course is open to
females of any age, physical type, and conditioning.
Males must be at least 27 years old with a
clean criminal record and a
good background check. There are no specific physical conditioning requirements, but students should be prepared for a full day of learning and physical exertion.
Skills You Will Learn
The Level One CQS class focuses on the following core skills:
- Attack Avoidance Techniques
- Blocks and Strikes
- Safe Firearm Take-Away Technique
- Distraction Techniques
- Use of Baton (Key Defender)
- Four Levels of Mental Awareness
- Lethal Empty Hand Techniques
These skills are vital for protecting yourself when access to weapons is not possible.

For the Level One CQS course, you will need:
- Loose clothing suitable for physical activity

This course does not require prior experience, but students should come prepared to exert themselves physically.
