This class is designed for individuals with no prior experience with firearms, including those who may have a fear of firearms. It’s also ideal for parents looking to introduce children to the world of firearms in a controlled, formal setting. The course provides a hands-on introduction to the safe handling of handguns and rifles, building confidence and skill in a supportive environment.
Class Dates & Location
The Basic Pistol/Rifle Instruction class takes place at Red Dawn Range. Check the 2021 Training Schedule for exact dates and times. This class offers a flexible training schedule designed to accommodate beginners and new shooters looking to start their journey in firearm safety and handling.
Class Fee & Payment Information
The class fee is $125.00, which covers all materials and range maintenance. Payment can be made via the website or by sending a check made payable to E.T. Gwynn to PO Box 3956, Durango, CO 81302. If you need to cancel, a 20% refund will be issued. Ammunition is priced according to the invoice at the time of purchase.
What You’ll Learn in Class
The course is a mix of classroom instruction and range time. Students will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling, firearm parts and operation, ammunition basics, shooting fundamentals, and how to clean their pistol or rifle. The class is designed to introduce safe firearm handling in a supportive and beginner-friendly environment.
Class Requirements & What to Bring
You are encouraged to bring your own firearm if you would like to get more familiar with it. If you don’t have one, Red Dawn Range has firearms available for use. Bring the instruction manual for your firearm if possible, and make sure to bring note-taking materials. All other materials will be provided.

You will become familiar with the parts and function of firearms, and learn how to safely shoot and care for them.
